Local government in its every action touches people in their daily lives more intimately than any other form of government. This field involves thousands upon thousands of local governments ranging from large cities and counties to small towns, boroughs, special districts and authorities. In this setting, attorneys advise local governments on a daily basis on everchanging and expanding legal problems.
IMLA provides a specific, yet thorough set of tools so a local government attorney can quickly anticipate and react to change in federal, state and local law.
We invite you to discover more of our services by viewing our benefits. IMLA's bi-weekly newsletter sorts through caselaw and other developments around the country and summarizes local legal development on a timely basis. IMLA Working Groups
IMLA's Working Groups bring local government IMLA member attorneys who share common problems together on conference calls and listservs, to share experiences and facilitate problem solving in these areas of common interest with other local government attorneys from across the country. Whether you have a question, issue, or would like to share your expertise, these working groups allow you to stay connected. Click here to view the working groups.
When new issues emerge or old ones are revisited, a direct exchange of information from colleagues of other jurisdictions is invaluable. IMLA encourages its members to share information and solutions to legal problems. Each member, including all deputy and assistant attorneys within a member's office, may join and participate in the activities of up to three IMLA sections annually. Click here to view the sections.
IMLA, and its partner, Municipal Code Corporation, operate a listserv exclusively for use by local government attorneys. Joining is free, but limited to practicing municipal attorneys. The listserv has over 700 municipal professionals and has proved to be an invaluable tool. Uses of the listServ may include fielding requests for sample ordinances or serving as a platform for debate among municipal attorneys on topics of current interest.
