  • Autonomous Vehicles

The excitement for autonomous vehicles is real and deserving. However, existing laws and regulations (from vehicles codes to federal safety regulations) do not exactly accommodate this technology… yet. Community and transportation planning, transportation networks, infrastructure build-out, economic development initiatives, public safety and local revenue will all be dramatically impacted and transformed. Join Best Best & Krieger for breakfast to discuss the promise and challenges presented by autonomous vehicles, and what steps must be considered now at the local and regional level to take advantage of the opportunities presented by AVs — and to protect against the potential legal, economic and social issues raised by their deployment. Insightful updates on the roll-out of this technology and regulatory analysis from our D.C. attorneys on what is occurring at the federal, state and local level, including how agencies can ensure their concerns and needs are included in any future rulemakings and Congressional legislation, will also be discussed.

Host: Greg Rodriquez, Best, Best & Krieger LLP

  • Canadian Table: City/Town Solicitor

An open discussion that will cover topics such as entity regulation, seccession planning challenges, and what the 82nd IMLA Annual Conference in Niagara should entail.

Host: Mary Ellen Bench, City Solicitor, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada & PPaul DeMelo, Kagan Shastri LLP

  • Employment Law

We will discuss issues of interest or concern to attendees at the table, including LGBT, Pay Equity, ADA/Accommodation, Harassment, Retaliation, Hiring/Recruiting, Promotion, Terminations, Compensation, Leaves, Investigations, Testing, Litigation, Adverse Impact Review, Wage & Hour, Class Actions, Employment Testing – or any other issue you choose to raise at the table.

Host: Kenneth Willner & Tammy Daub, Paul Hastings

  • Employment Law:  "Before you drop the axe . . ."

This session offers attendees the opportunity to discuss consideration (including questions and procedures) before terminating an employee.  As usual, there also will be opportunity for round-table discussion of current concerns and issues associated with municipal employment.

Host: Daniel D. Crean, Attorney, Crean Municipal Consulting Services

  • How your citizens use your website

We'll discuss the type of content, design and features of websites that are most useful and present the most favorable impression of the City. Topic also includes search tips for finding what you're looking for.

Host: Lawton Langford, Municode

  • Land Use Section – Open Discussion

  • Regulating Adult Businesses and Massage Establishments: Effecting Strategies for Preventing Secondary Effects and Sexual Trafficking

Local governments are playing an increasingly important role in detecting and preventing human trafficking. As law enforcement agencies continue to identify trafficking cases in certain adult businesses and massage parlors, cities are strengthening their licensing regulations to help prevent criminal activity and weed out bad actors. This discussion highlights key ordinance provisions and best practices.

Host: Scott Bergthold, Attorney, Law Office of Scott D. Bergthold, PLLC

  • Sanctity or Sanctuary - The legal Battle over Illegal Immigration

The inherent conflict of law and policy and the municipal lawyer's place on the battlefield.

Host: Laszlo Pinter, Danbury, CT

  • Supreme Court

To say the Supreme Court loves cities is no exaggeration! At this WONK table we will discuss any aspect of Supreme Court litigation that interests participants from the current docket to the current vacancy to issues of future likely interest to the Court affecting local governments.

Host: Lisa Soronen

  • There’s Money for That: How Cities Can Use P3s and New Markets Tax Credits to Fund Project

Host: Ruben Duran, Partner, Best Best & Krieger

  • Unbalanced Justice- Is your City Running a "Debtors' Prison"

Harris v. City of Austin, a "debtors' prison" lawsuit is the only case dismissed to date alleging the "criminalization of poverty" by municipalities in the national trend of federal lawsuits being filed across the country from Ferguson, Missouri to Austin, Texas, which have garnered attention from the national press and the U.S. Department of Justice.

Host: Chris Edwards, Robin Harris & Judge Sherry Statman, Austin, TX

  • Young Lawyers Table

From striking the perfect work-life balance to mastering the fine art of networking, there’s a lot that goes into your first few years of law practice beyond writing briefs and researching case law. Young attorneys, as well as the young at heart, are invited to attend this informal discussion of life after law school and life as a young local government lawyer. Lawyering war stories are strongly encouraged.

Host: Caitlin Cutchin, Associate Counsel, IMLA
